LOCAL MINISTRY BLESSES THOSE IN NEED
By Paul Gangarosa
Charleston has a new way to help our less fortunate neighbors.
In April 2017, James Island resident Katie Dahlheim read about a project in Arkansas being used to provide immediate assistance to those need.
The idea is a “blessing box”, a small cabinet which lets people either give or receive aid. Their motto is “Leave what you can, take what you need”.
The concept is simple: people who are able to help can leave non-perishable items such as canned food, pasta, rice, cereal, crackers, diapers, baby formula, dog/cat food, school supplies, and other products and those in need simply come by the box and take what they require.
The Blessing Boxes can be of any size or configuration. While there are plans for building them, Dahlheim has seen all sorts of items converted into Blessing Boxes.
“We have kitchen cabinets, jewelry boxes, DVD cabinets being used as Blessing Boxes. My first Blessing Box was an old kitchen cabinet with a top added”.
Dahlheim wanted people to have an easy way to help others. “People are generous but very busy,” she explains, “Blessing Boxes provide that simple way to give back and be a blessing to those in need”.
Dahlheim collects no information regarding how many people are helped. The boxes are located throughout the Lowcountry.
